One of the most successful vehicles in Toyota’s 4×4 lineup, the 4Runner helped jump start the mid-size SUV craze in 1985. With legendary capability and durability, the 4Runner has long been a favorite of the enthusiast crowd. The first yew years were only 2-door, but since 1992 the 4-door variant has been the main or only choice. Over the years, there have been 5 major variations to the platform, each successively improving on the previous version.
One constant has been the 8” rear differential, which has largely served as the only available rear diff, whether or not the vehicle came with a rear locker or not. In 2010, with the 5th Gen revision, the rear diff was finally upgraded to an 8.2” rear diff, which features many welcome improvements, such as shimmed side adjusters, more ring gear bolts, larger bearings and a stiffer drop out.
Throughout the generations, aside from the 1-year only 1985 solid axle model using a standard 8” diff, the front diff has seen 1 of 2 variants for IFS. Through 2002, a 7.5” differential was used, and from 2003 on, the 8” clamshell, reverse rotation diff is shared with the 2nd Generation Tacoma.
It’s also worth noting, that Toyota has made several vehicles sharing the SUV platform from 2003 on, globally known as the ‘120-series’. The US market Lexus GX, and FJ Cruiser both share essentially the same running gear as a comparable year 4Runner. Produced from 2003-2009, the Lexus GX470 is an excellent sleeper candidate as a capable all-arounder, and even offers a few features that the 4Runner lacked. When the 4Runner received a major update in 2010, the GX460 was introduced and shared the same mechanical upgrades, namely the 8.2” rear diff. The FJ Cruiser was Toyota’s answer to the Jeep Wrangler, with available manual transmission and rear lockers making for a capable and reliable alternative in the short wheelbase, off road oriented SUV market. ALthough the FJ Cruiser did not get much of a body update, it did follow the same mechanical updates in 2010, also getting the 8.2” rear diff.
